Giethoorn

Giethoorn is a village in the Kop van Overijssel and is therefore located just below the north of the Netherlands. Giethoorn, also known as ‘Dutch Venice’, belongs to the municipality of Steenwijkerland and is part of National Park Weerribben-Wieden. The Dutch Venice is a place where people live, work and recreate. The village has many canals and lakes through which people sail to relax or to transport their goods. However, it is not the case that you cannot get anywhere in the village by car. This is only the case in certain parts, especially on the other side of the village canal.

Tourist attraction

The water village is now a tourist attraction for day trippers and holidaymakers from the Netherlands and abroad. Giethoorn has been receiving visitors since the end of the 19th century. Painters from the Hague University of Applied Sciences made the picturesque village famous with their beautiful landscape paintings. Initially, the ‘Dutch Venice’ was only visited sparingly by domestic tourists. Farming was therefore the most important means of existence, since tourism did not yet give a right to exist. The film Fanfare in 1958 gave tourism a huge boost. As a result, more domestic visitors came and other Europeans also knew how to find us. In recent decades, however, Giethoorn has been visited by tourists from all over the world.

Village canal Giethoorn

The most famous part of the village is of course the village canal with the adjacent Zuiderpad, Binnenpad and Noorderpad. In this part of the village you will find the typical wooden bridges, finders and thatched farms. Most museums, shops and restaurants in Giethoorn are located along the village canal.
